Task 3 - Coventions of Opening Sequences
Learning Comment: In this task, I have learnt multiple things about the codes and conventions which film producers tend to put in their opening sequences. This is shown in my video about the opening to Lords of DogTown. I have found the common structures for openings like, for example, they tend to begin with the institutional information followed by the film title. This informs the audience of the production/distribution companies as well as the title. Sometimes, this can give the audience a whole picture of the film as the typography of the film may be in a certain font or style which has connotations with the film. Also, the companies which helped made the film may also be strongly associated with set genres. An example of that is Lionsgate as they tend to associate their films with the thriller genre. Films also tend to give away narrative elements during the opening. For example, in Lords of DogTown, we see that the characters are into skating/surfing down at venice beach. They are clearly locals as it is spray painted 'locals only' on the opening and down the beach. This could tell us that a lot of the film may be focused along the lines of one o their hobbies, skating/surfing/ or maybe around their surfing spot. In relation to my opening sequence, I will try to implement the codes and conventions into mine so that it will follow a simple yet effective opening.
