The location for my opening sequence will consist of 3 different scenes. One being the characters bedroom, one being the hospital looking location and one being a coridoor.
Hospital: I am going to be using a hospital like location in the intro sequence to start of the film. This is because the character will begin the film by waking up which adds an enigma and mystery to the film. The use of this, I feel, will attract the audience and entice them to carry on watching so that they can figure out 'where is he, how did the get there' etc. The hospital will also be useful as I am going to be portraying the character as anxious and paranoid which will tie in well with the scene.
Corridor: Long corridor shot are often used in film to ramp up anxiety and build up suspense, which is exactly what I am going to be doing with my opening. I want there to be a big suspense build up to the audience realising that his was all just a virtual reality and I feel like a corridor will be perfect for giving that effect. The corridor also ties in well with my chosen genre as these sorts of scenes are typically connected to the thriller genre. In my own film also, I am trying to make the door at the end of the corridor act as the light at the en of the tunnel fort of situation. Not saying that the character will die in this opening but it is transporting him back into the real world. This is foreshadowing future narrative plots as this character will eventually die in the virtual world and wake up in the real one.
Bedroom: I am going to be using the characters bedroom as one of the scenes too. This is because it will add closure to the sequence which will allow the audience to connect with the character. It will almost be as if the film is inviting the audience into the characters life. I also fee like the use of tis location will be useful as the room is surrounded with posters of skateboarders with will act as the stereotype of 'cool' later down the line in the narrative.

Preliminary Task - Create a continuity sequence of at least 20 different shots
sequence of at least 20 different shots
Learners comment: During the preliminary task, I have developed my skills in this field. One thing I have got better at is filming. We had to use match on action, shot reverse shot and lot of different camera angles. I feel like my confidence behind the camera has improved dramatically. My skills in editing also got a lot better as we had to do all this under a time schedule of 2 hours so my editing under pressure became a lot better. However, there were a lot o continuity errors. At 0;12, there is a clear pause from where I was telling him to wait a while. If edited better, this would look more fluent.
I feel like I have learn't a lot about continuity editing in this task. For instance, I have found that this style of editing makes scenes of multiple shots seem more in tune and smooth. Continuity editing would be useful for scenes of lots of action and motion.

Task Fifteen - Storyboard and Shot list
Learners Comment:
In this task, I have learnt the importants of creating a storyboard and shot lots and how it will help me during production. To me, the story board acted as a mental planner for when filming and editing and I took it with me whenever I had to do anything media related. They really helped me when I needed to know what I was doing. During post-production, I had been constantly looking at the storyboard for dhelp on means of editing as I had to know what I was on about when I originally made the plan.

Task 19 - Sound
The sound I will be using in my opening will both reflect the paranoia on the character as well as the strangeness of the location and where he is. I will be using the website 'Freesounf.org' as they have lots of user created material which is usable on legal terms. This is because the content is created and placed upon the website by people and it is free to use. I will use some eerie sound effects as well as music which will fit into the thriller genre.
I will also try to use a lot of foley sounds like the closing of doors and heartbeats etc. This is because it will add a bit more depth into my project as sound is the second most important thing when making films of any context. In my sequence, I have a lot of closing doors, tense scenes and walking. By using these foley sounds, The audience will feel more drawn towards the opening as the sounds will ad more dimensions into it.
For the soundtrack, I want to use something that will let everyone know that this film (later down the line) will be tense when involving the character in the vr headset however will be calm when he steps back into reality. I want the soundtrack to be implemented when the character is confused as the audience will get a better sense that this place isn't good and I also want the music to vanish as he takes the headset off so that people will look and be like 'ohhh'. The use of this effect will hopefully be used to keep the audience drawn to the film and, if it was a full feature film, will make viewers want to continue watching to see where the story goes.

Props
Props I will use in the film
Blood/Water bag: The water bag will be used to let the audience know that the character is in the hospital. This prop is a strong connotation of a hospital and the thriller genre as it is typically seen in thriller films. I will place this bag on a stand and have it attached to this persons arm to ensure people that something bad has happened
Virtual reality headset: This prop will play an important part in the opening sequence as it will act as an item that helps the audience to understand what is going on. This will be used when the character gets out of the hospital reality to come back into the real world.
Cups of tea, kettle etc: This will be used by the nurse as she will come in, make a cup of tea and offer the protagonist one.

Graphs: I may include a graph of some sort of graphs as it will make the hospital (medical room) look more official and productive.
Scissors, pliers, etc: Just like in any holy wood hospital, we always tend to see a table full of equipment. These equipment are often used to scare audiences and frighten them thinking the worst can happen. They are also made to put an impression on the main character of any film so this would coincide perfectly with my opening sequence.
Task 18: Typography
Font
For the font, I will try to look for something that fits into the category of corruption, sci-fi, horror and coming of age. I have thought that slightly futeristic text with corroded aspects linked in.
I am thinking something along the lines of this as it has strong connotations with the sci-fi genre whilst also including elements of a corroded nature to show the corruption that will happen through out the story line.

However, I may need to think about adding a glitching effect onto the text as that will play an important part in the film to distinguish the reality and the virtual reality. This text is used in the popular game 'Watch dogs'. The game is about hacking and using hacks to have a supposed 'free world'. I feel like a text which looks like this will be very relatable to the genre
I Feel like the use of a text like this will portray the film very well as it shows coding within the text. It also shows glitching and distortion which will be perfect for the film I am making as the film will be slightly dark.

Me interviewing my mate
Here, I am asking my mate, Josh, about some of the text I am thinking of using. He feels like the 'coalition' text would be good for the title as it will fit into the thriller nature of the film and it also incorporates aspects of corrosion which can link into the transition between the real world and the virtual one.
Another interview with Michael
However, in contrast from Josh's point of view, Michael feels like the 'parametric glitch' font will fit in perfectly with my opening as I am using lots of technology and glitching within the film. The actual font shows glitching and coding within the actual font which is actually very good for my opening as I am going to try to show coding and the actual film is slightly revolved around hacking and glitching.
Final verdict
To put the font to conclusion, I feel like I will use the parametric glitch font for my typography. That being because it just fits in perfectly! For starters, it has glitching and coding. These elements will coincide with the opening very effectively as it will highlife the film before it has even started. One example of this is incorporated in the game 'Watch dogs'. they use a text which basically sums up the entire game (The font is shown above called 'Hacked') as it is focused around hacking throughout the city.
Other typography
For the other typography, I will incorporate the actors names and the institutional information. The production/distribution companies will be Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures as they are typically associated with films of this nature.
Task Six: Audience Research
Learning Comments: During this task, I have learnt about what people perceive when watching opening sequences. For example, It has told me what people expect to see in an opening sequence. I have also learnt a bit about shot reverse shot as I decided to film the interviews using that and I feel like I have a hit more experience when using it now. I may use the style of including narrative elements in my opening but not a lot as I don't want to overdo it.

Task 14: Script Writing
Screenplay for Access Code by Anonymous CwNOPIqQm on Scribd
Learners comment: this planning helped my preparation to the film a lot as it allowed me to outline the basic structure of the opening. When it comes to doing my final task, I will be referencing to this script constantly to allow myself to re cap on my own ideas without worrying about forgetting anything.
Task 13: Audience Profile
Learning Comment:
In this task, I have learnt to analyse for audience demographic. For example, I had to analyse my own work for elements that can relate to specific audience demographics and apply those elements in order to chose my audience. In my film, there are schools shown as well as nagging parents and relationships. These all have connotations with the coming of age genre so I have classed my film as coming of age and I have backed up that I feel like my audience should be the teenage audience. Alternatively, I have also found out that these connotations could also relate to the audience of parents who have teenage children as they can relate to some of the elements pop the films such as teenagers coming home late and not obeying their set rules.

Task 12: Thinking off a concept/final idea
Nathan Neal's media presentation from Nathan Neal
Learners comment:
In this task, I have learnt a lot. For example, I have learnt the benefits of planning put my entire opening as it has helped me get an insight to all the things I need. One benefit is the idea of location as I have thought up some really good locations which can represent the film. I have also had a long hard thing about the genre and which genre this opening could coincide with and I have found the best options which will relate. On a whole, I have found that planning my work has really helped me to construct the scene within my head.

Mind map of my idea
What this is:
This is a mind map of the ideas I have been thinking of for my opening sequence. Whilst doing this, I have brainstormed the pros and cons of each possible idea so that I could come to a final conclusion of what I want my idea to be.
Previous idea: One of the previous ideas I thought of and mind mapped was the idea of a character going to the skatepark and injuring himself. I realised, however, that this would become quite the challenge as I recently found out that I am not aloud to include myself in the filming of my opening so I came up with a new idea revolving around a hospital and virtual reality.

Task 10: Analyse previous students work
Directors commentary
In this opening, I have liked the theme they have integrated within it which i the theme of mystery and horror. For example, the music has a very sinister tone to it with the use of the piano. Again, we also later on see a dead body by a beach in a bag. This dead body by the beach could tie into Levi-Strauss' binary opposition theory as we have an opposition between the peacefulness of the beach contrasted with the disturbing body on the beach. I have also really liked the camera angles and editing techniques used. For example, one of my favorite bits is when the character is stood on the beach. It begins with a medium shot of him looking out at the sea; the character is positioned to the far right of the shot giving more detail into the scene where he is at. We then see a close up of the characters face look from right to left then to right again, letting the audience know that he is looking out to sea. The next part is an eyeline match of the camera panning across the sea showing the audience what he is looking at so we would feel less agitated as to what he is looking at. I feel like this is a good use of editing techniques used. Also, one thing I have liked is the use of foreshadowing. I say this because, in the first minute, we see see a character pick up a knife and slice a piece of meat. Later on, we see a dead body on a beach which, in addition to the sinister tone of music, leads me to believe that this was foreshadowing.
In terms of strengths in this video, I would have to say that their ability to combine different codes and conventions to actually create a short and an enigma within the opening would have to be one as the audience are left wandering 'Who did he kill?' and 'Why?'. Another strength in this opening is the typography. For example, the text used on the screen telling us the name of the film and directors etc have been used very well in this as they have left good gaps in between the text and have even made them fade in and out of the screen. They are also very visible and easy to read. I also feel like the use of the compelling and sinister soundtrack has really added to the strength of this opening as it has created a rather threatening feeling to it.
However, there are some areas which it could be improved. For example, the use of text could of been edited a bit more, as when the text 'CARRION' is show on the screen, it seems a bit boring and plain. The background behind this text is also a bit plain as it is just an ordinary black background. Also, I feel like the time it tool for him to chop the meat and put it in the pan was a bit odd and over exaggerated in terms of the speed in which he was doing it. It seemed un-natural however I don't know if it was intended or not.
In this opening, the narrative is constructed from the point of view of this seemingly normal character. However, we see a dead body which could suggest that, if this was an actual film, it would follow the story of this supposed villain in relation to Propp's theory. Nevertheless, we aren't introduced to any other part of the narrative other than the fact that he probably lives by the sea as he is the only character we see in this opening. Moreover, the audience would slightly feel compelled to carry on watching the film as we are still under the mystery of who he killed and why.
The representation of this particular social group, which looks to be about mid 20's because of the suit, is presented in a rather eerie way as we never really see this character smiling and it seems to be that he is associated with murder so, since he is the only character that we see, we can represent this social group as frightening.
In terms of the target audience, it seems to be that it was targeted towards young adults and adults so yes I do agree that it would be an appropriate film for the audience demographic
Now, the institutional information is used very well here. For example, the use of including the company 'New line cinema' as their producer and distributor is great as this company is very well known for their collection of different horror films.
In terms of sound in this opening sequence, I feel like it was an appropriate song choice of good quality. The song was Winters Knight my Nox Arcana and I believe that it fits in perfectly with the atmosphere and setting of this opening. The sound is overlapped with most of the scenes in this opening sequence even know we do hear a couple of sound effects added to replace the ambient sound used as, I am guessing, it wouldn't of been of high quality.
The mise en scene of this opening is very appropriate for the opening. for example, in one shot, the main character is stood, centered to the screen, looking out to the ocean. This is a particular good example in the use of mise en scene as it captures some of the main elements of the genre of film you would expect this to be. For instance, the costume used on the character is all black (despite a white tee shirt. The colour black has a lot of negative connotations with all kinds of things from death to mystery, which is some of the things we already have seen in this opening. The weather used in this shot creates a pathetic fallacy on the scene as the dark gloomy clouds suggest that this film is going to be quite a serious film and the wind could foreshadow rain to be expected which could also back up the supposed genre of the film connecting to horror or mystery. Also, a beach is typically associated in pop culture as a paradise to enjoy the summer at. This shot clearly shows us that it isn't summer and, in fact, more winter as the weather shows a storm. This could also create another binary opposition as we see bad weather contrasted from a beach.
Evidently, the camera angles and editing techniques used for this sequence are really good as it shows the audience just what they want to see in an opening sequence. For example, we see a lot of scenery i the opening which tells the audience where about this opening is set. we also see a house. Could this be the main character's house? Aside from the eyeline match previously talked about, we also see more uses of editing techniques used throughout the opening. For instance, there is match on action used when the character is putting the bin bags in the bin as we initially see the camera go from him walking out the door to a shot, taken from in the bin, of him chucking the rubbish bag in. This was used really well and, in addition to that, there is a prolonged pause of a black screen. This black screen is used to create suspense and fear amongst the audience as the black screen brings out your senses more as you are not distracted by any images. There is also a jump cut used as we see the scene go from this character chucking something in a bin to a hand in a bag at the beach.
Furthermore, I feel like the editing suits the genre really well as we see a lot of different techniques used from match on action to eye line matches. Yes, the editing does suit the genre but these techniques are typically associated with any genre. However, I do feel as if there is a slight tint used to create a darker effect on the atmosphere, which will directly relate to the genre being portrayed.

Directors commentary
In this opening, there are many things that I like about it. One thing I liked was the use of camera editing. For example, they have used glitching and buffering to create a sense of discomfort
and maybe hysteria. The glitching also creates the effect that this character is conflicted and traumatized by some event maybe. Another thing I have liked is the use of quick shots. For example, when the girl is walking with the doll, the frame quickly cuts to a guy with his hood up dressed in all back, then back to the girl again. This is to create fear as the audience will feel shocked when they see this mysterious character for the first time. Furthermore, the use of mine-en-scene in this opening is really good! For instance, the doll used in this is brilliant as it acts as a source of terror. I say this as dolls are typically associated with horror in recent culture and the makeup used on the doll perfectly represents the scariness of the setting. Also, the costume used on the actual girl in this is good as she has used blood on her shirt and holes in her pajamas. This will associate this girl with being gritty and broken which could suggest her personality is broken adding to the horror.Task 9: Representation in film
Task 9: Representation in film
Learning comment:
In this task, I have learnt that many of the opening sequences to the coming of age genre share the same codes and conventions. For example, I noticed that most opening sequences follow the same pattern of describing the basic elements of the film so that the audience is already caught up upon watching the film. In Kick-Ass, we see the main character, his friends, family and that he isn't very popular and that is the current equilibrium in the film. This is just one way of representing the film. Secondly, I have noticed that the Mise-en-scene can say a lot about the main character from the clothes that they wear to the way that they act. In Juno, for instance, we see she is sluggish and represents the typical America careless teenager. The sound used is often an up bear happy song to set the audience in the mood for the film. This is represented to make the audience feel welcome into the film. Camera angles often feature long shots and close ups to show the audiences character as a whole and how they act close up. This is to make the audience know what the character is like. Finally, editing is most always continuity shots as this creates pace and speed to the scene. After all, the audience just wants to watch the film so the directors don't often like to drag out the opening.

My title sequence for a coming of age 80's film
My recreated title sequence for The Breakfast Club
Task: In this task, we had to recreate the title sequence for a coming of age 80's film. In this instance, I chose The Breakfast Club as it is highly associated with the audience demographic. Also, in this task we had to think about the amount of time in which each font stays on the screen as well as the type of font and the music.
Process: The actual process of this sequence took a little while. I began by analysing the actual opening sequence for the length of the clips and the order of the clips. I then began to find the actual font which was the Helvetia font. Once I had that font, I got the blank screen of iMovie and wrote up each individual slide. Once the slides were wrote up, I had to implement the exact time in which the sequences played for to make it seem exact.
What I learnt?
In the process of this, I learnt hat making a title sequence requires a lot of precision. For example, you need to be precise about the amount of time each sequence played for in order to make sure that the audience are able to read the text displayed. Also, it is possible that you would have to be precise about the audience demographic the title sequence is being made for. For example, you wouldn't have a lovely title sequence with lots of hearts and pink letters for a horror film would you? The title sequence has to match the genre and the demographic. I feel like the title sequence is a very important aspect of each film as it sets the tone for the rest of the movie. In many coming of age films, you would expect to maybe see the font in school writing or in any variation of times new roman as these sorts of typography are typically associated with the teenage genre as most teenagers are either still in full time education or have just left. For improvement, I feel like I will try to add the transition effects to the sequence as transition effects are often important as it keeps the audience focused on the screen.

Task 8: Narrative Structure
Learning Comment:
In this task, I have learnt that I am capable enough to predict the story line of an entire movie from just the opening sequence. For example, I figured out what the characteristics of the protagonists are like as I can see that from their first impressions. I can see that this film is also set at a school just from the scenery. I also see that there are a lot of narrative elements shown in the first few minutes like the equilibrium.
Continuity sequence of 30 different shots
Continuity sequence of 30 different shots
Task: In this task, we have had to create a continuity sequence which featured lots of different shots that tie into each other. In this scenario, we have shown the process of Michael steeling Tyler's magazines and hiding them.
The process: In the process of filming, we have thought of lots of camera techniques. For example, we have used lots of match on action. Match on action is used to make two different shots tie into each other in order for the transition to seem seemless. This is useful when creating a continuity sequence as it will make everything flow really well. In this case, we used a lot of match on action with the process of opening doors. Another camera technique we have used is the point of view shot. The point of view shot is used to let the audience feel as if they are looking at something specific with the character. You can see this being used when we first see Michael look at the lock on the door then the camera switches to a close up of that lock as Michael opens it. We also use low angle shots a lot to show power and superiority on specific characters. When Michael is walking to steal the magazines, the camera is at a low angle making this character seem powerful. This is a good technique as it gives the audience an insight to what the character is like.
Alternatively, there many things we could improve on too. For example, when filming, we first had to think of each individual shot to go with this sequence. This proved to be quite the challenge as there are so many little things you can film in one scene. We also had some issues editing. One editing issue is that IMovie couldn't handle 60fps so the entire clip lagged throughout meaning it was very frustrating to edit so one improvement we could make for net time we film is to lower the frames per second so that the Mac can handle it. We also found that it was rather challenging trying to consistently keep the sequence looking seamless and continuous as we had to make sure that each scene was set chronologically.
Learning comment:
What I have learnt from this task is that continuity shots are quite challenging. For example, you need to include a lot of camera techniques in order to keep the shots looking spot on. I have also learnt that directing the sequence requires a lot of precision and patience. Furthermore, I have found that I need to keep the frames per second down to at least 30 in order to edit a sequence well as the Mac's cannot handle 60 fps.

Preliminary task using match on action, 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot
Preliminary task using match on action, 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot
In this task, we were asked to try to implement all three camera techniques such as shot-reverse-shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule. I feel like we did have a couple of faults in the editing but it actually turned out looking pretty good! For example, in the opening part of this, we was meant to be using match on action but, rather than this looking like match on action, it turned out to look more like jump cuts which alternatively made it seem like the protagonist was anxious as he is looking into class rooms and opening doors. I feel like this ended up quite well as it could make the audience perceive the clip as if the character is looking for his friends but he is getting anxious as he cannot find them. Moreover, when it came to the shot-reverse-shot, I feel like we succeeded with this fairly well as you can clearly see that two characters are talking and the way it was filmed makes it seem pretty seamless. We also use the 180 degree rule in this scene as we don't cross over it at any point.
